So it is God who decides to show mercy. We can neither choose it nor work for it. Romans 9:16.
You have probably heard this phrase many times and on different occasions that "Life is not fair." While it appears that some folks can never catch a break, others appear to be cruising through life with no apparent harm. Is this all based on perceptions or is it actually true that “Life is not Fair?”
It's Good That Life Is Not Fair
"It is actually true that life is not fair. In fact, life is not meant to be fair. The sad part is that some folks would go to jail for crimes they didn’t commit while others would walk free. Others would be at the wrong place at the wrong time and it would be their last."
This is partly because we live in a broken world. However, the flip side of life not being fair could actually be good for you. Would you love to have been punished and given severe punishment for all the bad stuff you’ve ever done? I don’t think so. More importantly, the reason why it’s actually good that life is not fair is because of something called “Mercy”. Mercy is not getting the judgment you deserve for the bad you’ve done. Take for example, if you were doing 65mph in a residential zone that’s posted 25mph, would you be looking forward to getting what you deserve or asking the judge to let you bear the full weight of the law?
Life Is Rigged
Surprisingly, in a way, life is rigged with mercy. Unfortunately, if you don’t know the God of Mercy, you would probably always get the short end of the stick. If you always want to handle life on your own and tell the Creator to shut it, life would be seriously rigged against you. You may get His general mercies of rain, snow, sunshine and few spots here and there, but the special mercy reserved for His children may elude you because mercy & compassion are His own prerogatives. He decides who gets Mercy and who doesn’t (Romans 9:15-16).
For example, Satan and his agents would not get mercy but you can. Yes. The good news is that you can also benefit from His mercy and compassion when you become one of His children. When you surrender your life to Him to have full control, you’d be surprised at many harm that would be far from you. Most importantly, the punishment every member of the human race deserved as a result of sin would be waved away from you just like that, and your record of wrongs expunged and forgotten forever.
Check Yourself
However, if you have given your life to Him and seem not to be enjoying this privilege often or on a daily basis, check yourself. If your prayers are never answered with results, check how merciful you are to others around you who don’t deserve it. Are you extending mercy and compassion to others or you always want them to get what they deserve? Our Lord said plainly that those that are merciful would also get mercy in return (Matt 5:7).
Finally, the best news is that the God of Mercy commits Himself to renew His mercies every morning so that you never run out and always have surplus (Lamentations 3:22-23). So, life ain’t fair, and that’s a good thing!
